I have to admit that when I first got the literary assignment I had no idea what to write about. Then I saw the option that you could write about who inspired you with learning to read and write. I knew instantly that I should write about my dad. My dad started incorporating reading and writing into my life at a young age. I remember him sitting me in the bathtub with my twin brother. He bought stick on letters that clung to the side of the shower. That is how I learned the alphabet. He always made reading and writing fun.

Beauty
Beauty is not just skin deep. It lies within the person. Being beautiful isn’t about how long your hair is or the color of your skin. In the story the characters believed that to be beautiful you had to look a certain way. But in reality, beauty is so much more. In the movie Beastly, the main character was shallow, judgmental, and arrogant. Anyone who wasn’t as “beautiful” as him was treated with no respect. After being especially cruel to a girl he went to school with he was turned “ugly.” This forced him to look at himself in the mirror and see how it felt to be judged. He learned through the story that beauty is not just skin deep.

Poem to a Narrative
Converting my poem into a narrative wasn’t too bad of a process. I first looked at the memories and details I had written about. Next, I expanded off of those ideas. I added more depth to them; by being able to do so, it helped me describe the memories and ideas more vividly. I felt I used better imagery in my narrative than I did in the poem I had written previously. By being able to use more words, my thoughts flew freely and there was not a limit on my thinking. Writing about where I am from was good for me. It reminded me of home.

Where I'm From
I am from a small town where everyone knows everyone and football games are a big deal.
I am from home cooking, sitting around the table.
I am from bonfires, s’mores, and a cackling fire.
I am from a place where friends are family.
I am from a boy who is not only my boyfriend, but also a best friend.
I am from a place where material things are better than whom you are.
I am from judgment.
I am from people who talk behind others back.
I am from closed-minded, a town full of narrow people.
I am from where different and unique are unimaginable.
